What are the most common dental procedures in pediatrics?

Some of the most common dental procedures that are booked with our pediatric dental clinic include:

– Pediatric dental fillings
– Pediatric dental cleanings
– Pediatric dental extractions
– Pediatric dental crowns

While children may be worried or even scared when coming to the dentist for pediatric dental procedures, we ensure that each child that visits feel comfortable and enjoys their experience as much as possible. At Friends Family Dental and Orthodontics, we understand how scary a new environment may be for children, this is why we go above and beyond to show kids that dental offices are a safe environment and teach them all about their oral health and how to better maintain it to keep them informed and having fun.

Why is pediatric dental care important?

Pediatric dental care is very important, we try to remind parents that oral hygiene starts as early as infancy, while we understand parents can only do so much for their children at such a young age, we suggest and highly recommend parents and children take care of their oral health by washing their gums and taking care of their teeth once they start to break through the gums by brushing and flossing daily.

Pediatric dentistry is a key factor in children’s oral health, during pediatric dentistry appointments, we will do a checkup, and cleaning of the child’s teeth and mouth to ensure they are on the right track to preventing any future dental issues.

Our clinic and our pediatric dentists have the latest and greatest technology and are up to date with the new techniques used for pediatric dental procedures to provide our youngest patients with a pleasant experience during their pediatric dental appointment.

What questions will a pediatric dentist usually ask?

We highly recommend booking your child a pediatric dental appointment within 6 months of their first tooth erupting through the gums, or latest at 12 months of age. During this first appointment, we may ask you several questions to ensure we have all of the information necessary to update their file and proceed with a proper checkup:

– Does your child take a bottle?
– How many bottles a day does your child get?
– Feeding practices in your home (laying child in a crib with a bottle, or sitting up with a bottle, or breastfeeding laying down or sitting up.)
– Have you started to clean the gums and any teeth that have erupted?
– Are they teething?
– Have you provided them with teething toys? If so, what ones?
– Do they have a pacifier?
– How often do they use a pacifier?
– Do they suck their fingers?
– Any other habits we should be aware of?
– Feeding habits – what are you feeding them? What times?

During this visit, we won’t take more than 30 to 45 minutes to complete, as we understand it is such a new experience and environment to be in, that we want it to be fun, fast, and provide as much information as possible to help you with your child’s oral health.

Depending on the age of the child, the visit may include a full exam checkup of the teeth, jaw, gums, bite, and oral tissues to check for the development and growth of the child. A gentle cleaning may also be necessary. Gentle cleanings include polishing of the teeth, as well as the removal of any tartar, stains, or plaque.

Finally, the dentist will review with you and your child the importance of taking care of your oral health by showing how to brush your teeth properly, flossing, and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash.

We highly recommend children should be visiting their dentist once every 6 months to not only check up on their oral health but to also build confidence and comfort with their dentist.

How do I calm my child down at the dentist?

It is normal for your child to be scared or worried when entering a new environment and having some stranger in their face. However, you can help their anxiety by bringing their favorite toy with you to the appointment, and allowing them to play in the waiting room before getting called in. Try to stay calm during your child’s moment of unease, reassure them everything is fine, and try to get their mind off of the situation.
